Imagine a world in which you have died. Once you have gone the way of the dodo the earth will be a very different place; the people you have known and loved will still be here, but to them life will be very different. This is true on both an emotional and practical level.

There are many individuals alive now who need you in ways you will never understand; some will need you for love but there are those who need you more for money. How will you provide for them once you are gone? The answer is, of course, over 50s life insurance.

For those who are not well versed in over 50s life insurance trying to navigate its complexities can be a gruelling and arduous mental journey; akin to the voyage of Odysseus the titular character of Homer’s Greek epic.  However with a small amount of knowledge the whole process can become much simpler and can provide both financial solutions to those you leave behind and can also provide peace of mind in your final years.

Life insurance is available to everyone who has hit the age of 50 or over in the UK. This means regardless of your health you will be entitled to it. Packages are usually purchased as term entities – this means paying monthly increments of a larger fee over a period of time often totalling years or decades; more often than not this process begins at the age of 50 and ends at the age of 90. This does not mean, however, that upon this latter age the coverage ends; it will always be vaild. Also at the age of 90 it is also possible for individuals to carry on making contributes to their insurance package although this will usually be at a much greater rate than the terms agreed in the fixed period.

As increments are made to try and make up a total figure it is also possible for an individual to add additional fees if they like and can even increase their fee paid one month only to reduce it to the fixed and agreed term the next one. So, for example, an individual has invested in a package worth £100’000 at a set rate of £10 a month they could, in the instance of a large scratch card win for instance, make a one off payment of £50 before paying the agreed £10 the next month.

To make sure the over 50s life insurance package you have invested in matches your set requirements some research needs to be undertaken. For example, some packages will not make payments on individuals deaths if they expire in a natural way but will do so in the instance of accidental death. To work out the best package for you make a list of desired specifications and then pursue it one of two ways. One way to do so would be to use the internet and its resources to find customisable packages you can tailor. Secondly, the more costly option, is to employ a broker and their specialist knowledge to do your research for you.
